Bernadette Kearns is a freelance writer and editor with a BA Honours Degree in English and German from University College Dublin and a First Class Honours Degree in Theatre Arts from Rose Bruford College, one of the UK’s top drama schools.

She worked in London for many years as a professional actress and director and gained first-hand experience of publishing and author slush piles from assignments with The Times newspaper and publishing house, Fourth Estate. She also has many years experience as a dramaturg and drama facilitator with schools and amateur drama groups in Ireland.

Bernadette founded Book Nanny Writing and Editing Services in 2013. She specialises in developmental (structural or content) editing for fiction, using her drama skills and experiences to help authors strengthen their storytelling craft and their own individual voice.

She is a professionally trained copy-editor and proofreader and is a full Member of the Association of Freelance Editors, Proofreaders and Indexers of Ireland (AFEPI Ireland).

Book Nanny Writing and Editing Services is an Approved Partner Member of the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi).


Bernadette has worked for publishing, legal, financial, and arts companies in Dublin and London and brings the skills and experience gained over many years working on a diverse range of business documentation and promotional material to her commercial client work.

Bernadette is a full Member of the Irish Institute of Legal Executives (IILEx). She speaks fluent German and has a Certificate in Legal German from the Law Society of Ireland and Goethe Institute.
